  • Alcohol: Please abstain from alcohol before the test
  • Medication :Any pre-existing medication should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician

Why it is Done

To help diagnose and monitor C-cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid cancer; to screen those at risk for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).

What is this test

Calcitonin is a hormone secreted by parafollicular / C cells of thyroid gland. This assay is useful for the diagnosis and follow up of Medullary carcinoma thyroid, as an adjunct to diagnosis of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type II and Familial Medullary thyroid carcinoma. It is occasionally used in the diagnosis and follow-up of Islet Cell tumors.
