Why it is Done

A Parathyroid hormone (PTH) test ascertains the parathyroid hormone levels present in the blood. This test helps identification of hyperparathyroidism and is known to diagnose abnormal calcium levels. It helps in observation and analysis to check the effectiveness of treatment of a parathyroid related condition in an individual. Very high or low PTH levels are known to be the cause of kidney and bone issues and cause changes in calcium and vitamin D levels.

What is this test

PTH is a protein hormone which is secreted by the parathyroid gland and helps regulate the body's calcium and phosphorus levels. The secretion of PTH is controlled by the levels of calcium in the blood. It acts to increase the concentration of calcium in the blood.
