PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. It is a protein made by both normal and cancerous cells in the prostate gland, the test is done to screen for cancer of the prostate.

Test Instructions/Precautions:

  • Alcohol: Please abstain from alcohol before the test
  • Medication :Any pre-existing medication should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician
  • Please Note: Avoid physical activities which apply unnatural pressure on the genitals. Stop activities like cycling for three days before the PSA test. Pressure on the prostate can falsely increase the PSA test results. Avoid ejaculation at least 24 hours before sample collection.

Why it is Done

This test is advised to screen for the prostate cancer, determine the requirement for prostate biopsy, monitor the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatment, detect recurrence of prostate cancer.

What is this test

This test measures the level of Prostate specific Antigen in blood. It is routinely advised test for screening of Prostate cancer. High levels can be seen in prostate cancer although benign prostatic hypertrophy, inflammation of prostate can also produce increased levels.
