Why is MRI BRAIN done ?

Physicians use the procedure to detect or confirm abnormalities within the blood vessels in the brain, including:

  • An aneurysm, a bulge or sac that develops in an artery due to weakness of the arterial wall
  • Atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the arteries
  • Arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of dilated blood vessels that disrupts normal blood flow in the brain
  • Vasculitis, an inflammation of the blood vessels, generally narrowing them
  • A brain tumor
  • A blood clot
  • A tear in the wall of an artery, known as a vascular dissection
  • A stroke (Stroke is a clinical designation that refers to the sudden neurological deficit resulting from a cerebrovascular event. It is divided into broad categories: ischaemic stroke  (80%), haemorrhagic stroke (15%) & subarachnoid haemorrhage (5%; not always thought of as a stroke). MRI protocol for stroke assessment is a group of MRI sequences put together to best approach brain ischaemia.)

Why is MRI BRAIN ?

MRI Brain Routine is a painless, non-invasive test that produces detailed images of your brain and brain stem. An MRI machine creates the images using a magnetic field and radio waves. This test is also known as a MRI Brain Anatomy or a cranial MRI. You will go to a hospital or radiology center to take a head MRI. An MRI scan is different from a CT scan or an X-ray in that it doesnt use radiation to produce images. An MRI scan combines images to create a 3-D picture of your internal structures, so its more effective than other scans at detecting abnormalities in small structures of the brain such as the pituitary gland and brain stem. Sometimes a CONTRAST agent or dye can be given through an intravenous (IV) line to better visualize certain structures or abnormalities.
