Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is done for many reasons. It is used to find problems such as tumours, bleeding, injury, blood vessel diseases, or infection. MRI also may be done to provide more information about a problem seen on an X-ray, ultrasound scan, or CT scan MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI uses the principle of magnetic resonance. Using the natural magnetic property of our body, the MRI machine is able to form images that help us diagnose the problem. Why is MRI such a good modality? MRI allows us to exquisitely see different parts of the body. In the brain, it allows us to differentiate between different areas. In the spine, MRI is the only modality that allows us to see the spinal cord. In joints, MRI allows us to view the internal parts of the joints, including ligaments, tendons and menisci. It also allows evaluation of various cardiac structures, as well as functional imaging of various parts of the brain. MRI does all this by sectioning the body in different planes. Just as it is necessary to slice a loaf of bread to know the quality of the slices, so also, MRI allows us to section the body to view its inner parts. Thus, the skull X-ray only shows us the outer part, whereas MRI shows us the inner parts of the brain. Where is MRI useful? All parts of the body can be scanned with MRI, but it is most useful in the brain, spine, bones, joints and the heart. It also has specific uses in other parts like the chest, abdomen and pelvis. For each part, there are specific indications or reasons for scanning. The referring doctor and the consultant radiologist are the best judges of the usefulness of MRI scanning in a specific situation and area. Are there any dangers in MRI scanning? Not ordinarily. However if you have any magnetizable items on or in your body, such as aneurysm clips, pacemakers, cardiac prostheses, metallic implants, etc. please inform us immediately, as there could be a problem related to these metallic items. What is the injection that I may receive? If necessary, you may be injected with a gadolinium-based dye to see things better

Why is MRI WHOLE BODY done ?

A whole body MRI scan looks at the body from head to toe in order to find cancers, inflammation or obstructive processes in the body. In the head, the exam can show brain masses, shrinkage, old strokes, the sinuses and nasal cavities. In the neck, abnormalities in the lymph nodes, thyroid masses or arthritis in the cervical spine can be identified. In the chest, the exam can show heart for enlargement, the lungs for cancer, and the aorta for aneurysms. Moving to the abdomen, the exam can show the pelvis area, the kidneys, liver, spleen, adrenal glands, gallbladder (gallstones), pancreas, bladder, uterus, ovaries and prostate for tumors, obstruction or inflammation. The exam can tailor images of the spine to show the spinal canal, disc herniation, and spinal stenosis; and in the extremities, arthritis in the joints. Additional exams of a specific area may be required if a problem is identified in order to obtain more detailed information. This exam is useful for individuals who are asymptomatic, yet want an overview of their current health condition. Early detection of cancers can radically change the type of treatment options that will be available to a patient.

Why is MRI WHOLE BODY ?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of non-invasive test that uses magnets and radio waves to create images of the inside of the body. The magnets and radio waves create cross-sectional images of the body part, which allows doctors to check for abnormalities in the tissues and organs without making an incision. An MRI whole body generates picture of all the body organs which includes head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, skeleton, spine, lymph nodes and its surrounding soft tissues. The technology used in an MRI allows doctors to examine soft tissues without bones obstructing the view. An MRI uses no radiation and is considered a safer alternative to a CT scan.
