Sonomammogram or breast ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure performed to assess the breasts and the blood flow to areas inside it. This test allows quick visualization of the breast tissue. It helps in detecting presence of lumps, cysts in the breasts.Where is ultrasound useful? Ultrasound is used in many parts of the body, specifically to view the fetus, for other gynecological abnormalities and to view the abdomen, orbits, thyroid gland, breast, testes, etc. Are there any dangers? There is no known danger to the use of ultrasound Are there any dyes in ultrasound, as in X-rays? As of now there are no "dyes" injected in routine ultrasound practice. Contrast media however are being evaluated for use in clinical trials. Who is qualified to do ultrasound? Only radiologists trained in ultrasound should perform these investigations. In many situations, however, gynecologists also perform ultrasound examinations on their own patients; if adequately trained/certified, this is acceptable.


Why is ULTRASOUND - SONOMAMMOGRAM done ?

A breast ultrasound sonomammography is recommended for women:

  • When a breast lump (mass) or a general lumpiness is felt in the breast
  • To determine if the abnormality detected through mammography or a palpable lump is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid tumor
  • Breast tissue is too dense to be assessed accurately by mammography
  • In high risk patients with family history of breast cancer, past history of breast cancer or in females older than 35 years of age as a preventive measure to screen for breast cancer
  • Additional method to evaluate the breast, when mammography is not so clear

There are no dietary restrictions or special preparations required for this scan

SLAs:
For Ultrasound test scheduled before 2 PM eConsultation will be scheduled before 9 PM same day and the physical reports to be delivered by 10 PM same day
For Ultrasound test scheduled after 2 PM eConsultation to start from 8 AM next day and the physical reports to be delivered starting from 8 AM next day
