A transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is an ultrasound technique that is used to view a man?s prostate and surrounding tissues. Under the guidance of the TRUS, the surgeon removes a small tissue from the prostate and sends for histo pathological examination. This helps in determining whether the prostate enlargement is benign or cancerous. Where is ultrasound useful? Ultrasound is used in many parts of the body, specifically to view the fetus, for other gynecological abnormalities and to view the abdomen, orbits, thyroid gland, breast, testes, etc. Are there any dangers? There is no known danger to the use of ultrasound Are there any dyes in ultrasound, as in X-rays? As of now there are no "dyes" injected in routine ultrasound practice. Contrast media however are being evaluated for use in clinical trials. Who is qualified to do ultrasound? Only radiologists trained in ultrasound should perform these investigations. In many situations, however, gynecologists also perform ultrasound examinations on their own patients; if adequately trained/certified, this is acceptable.
TRUS and prostate biopsy is used to diagnose prostate cancer in patients with an abnormal digital rectal examination or elevated PSA level, to assess prostate volume, to detect inflammation of the prostate (e.g. prostatitis), and to help determine the cause of infertility(e.g., blockages caused by prostatic cysts).

Biopsies are most commonly performed under ultrasound guidance. During the procedure, a special biopsy needle is inserted into the prostate gland through the wall of the rectum to remove several small samples of tissue for pathologic analysis. This method is known as Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy.
